Fastball
1. Good pitchers get on top of the ball and
are coming down in control of it
(hand behind the ball).
2. Pitchers should throw the ball on a downward
plane--the greater the angle
downward, the greater the advantage of the
pitcher. Two planes versus one plane.
3. Draw a line from home to second base and
the pitcher's arm should never go behind
it. Everything should be in line with
home
plate and second base.
|
|
Curve Ball
1. Should be thrown with little less speed
than the fastball, but the same motion.
2. Shorten your stride on the curve.
3. Lead with your chest and elbow and back
of wrist should face batter upon release.
4. Stay on top of the ball and pull forward
and across the body to the left knee.
Wrist
should end up wrapped around his waist.
5. On curve ball should have pitch change
two planes--down and away.
6. Karate chop best describes hand acceleration
required for a good curve ball.
|
|
Change Up
1. Choke the ball.
2. Lengthen your stride, stay closed with
lead side, stay inside of ball
3. Collapse your wrist (palm to sky)-drag
rear foot.
4. On change everything should be the same.
Keep it down and attack hitter.
5. Grip changes velocity so don't let catchers
tell pitcher it's too fast because
good arm
speed is needed. Grip should be adjusted,
not mechanics or arm position.
|
|
Slider
1. Hold the ball off-center with the middle
and index fingers placed to the outside
of the ball.
2. Release of the slider is similar to the
passing of a football.
3. Come straight down, hard, and let the
ball come off the second finger-- this
will
cause the ball to spin like a bullet.
4. The pitcher should use a little inward
turn to the wrist as in turning a doorknob.
5. The slider is especially effective because
of the velocity with which it is thrown.
Best slider is one with small break
that
breaks late and quick.
